Who Are The Shitile People?

The Shitile people are a subgroup or clan of the Tiv people of Nigeria. They speak a distinct dialect of the Tiv language called "Zwa Tiv".

The phrase "Shitile" or "Shi-tile" is intriguing, conveying a sense of stillness, calmness, and patience. Upon closer examination, the term "Shi-tile" reveals multiple meanings:

- "Hold it"
- "Stop"
- "Wait"
- "Calm dawn"
- "Cool dawn"

These interpretations evoke a sense of tranquility and quiet contemplation, offering a glimpse into the values and worldview of the Shitile people.

The Shitile people occupy a vast territory, roughly situated between 9.80°E and 8.90°N of the equator. They are primarily concentrated in two main regions, North Central and North East.

Taraba State
- Takum Local Government Area
- Donga Local Government Area
- Bali Local Government Area

Beyond their primary locations, significant Shitile populations can also be found in:

- Wukari Local Government Area

- Jalingo Local Government Area
- Kurmi Local Government Area
- Ardo Kola Local Government Area
- Gashaka Local Government Area
- Karim Lamido Local Government Area also in Taraba State.

Republic of Cameroon
- The Shitile people also reside in Cameroon, making up approximately 0.5% of the country's population.

This geographic distribution highlights the Shitile people's presence across multiple regions in Nigeria and Cameroon.

The headquarters of the Shitile people is located in Tor-Donga, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria.

The fertile Shitile land is conducive to the cultivation of a diverse range of crops, including:

Root Crops
- Yam
- Cassava
- Sweet potatoes
- Etcetera

Cereal Crops
- Guinea corn
- Millet
- Maize
- Rice
- Beans
- Soya beans
- Etcetera

Fruit Trees
- Banana
- Mango
- Cashew
- Orange

With its rich soil and favorable climate, Shitile land is an agrarian society with immense agricultural potential.

Apart from its fertile soil and agricultural potential, Shitile land is also richly endowed with a diverse range of mineral resources. These include coal, lead–zinc, barytes, limestone, gypsum, clay, phosphate, glass sand, fluorspar, salt, ironstone, uranium, sulphur, graphite, cassiterite, manganese, mica and silver. The high demand for these resources from global brands and countries underscores their critical role in producing various essential goods and services.

The Shitile land experiences two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season.

Seasonal Patterns
- The rainy season typically begins in March and ends in November.
- The dry season usually starts in November and ends in March.

Prevailing Winds
These seasonal patterns are influenced by two prevailing winds:

1. *North East Trade Wind/Dry Harmattan ("hii")*: Also known as the Tropical Continental air mass, this wind brings dust from the Sahara Desert.
2. *South West Trade Wind*: Originating from the South Atlantic Ocean, this wind is also referred to as the Tropical Maritime air mass.

Temperature and Rainfall
- Temperatures range from 20°C to 38°C during the dry season and 16°C to 28°C during the rainy season.
- Average annual rainfall varies between 1750mm and 2250mm.
