Liberalism to Looney Tunes

Liberalism to Looney Tunes

"Thou shalt not sin. Thou shalt not be merry." This seems to be the new Liberal creed. The world is painted as a perpetually bad place, and education is equated with constant seriousness, outrage, and meddling in others' lives. It's about self-righteous pronouncements and an unwavering sense of moral superiority.

The classic Liberal – the independent thinker, the social outcast, the one curious about differences and defending the right to express them – has been transformed. Their freedom, once only limited by the adage "your freedom to swing your fist ends where my nose begins," now feels suffocated. The right to individuality, once celebrated, has been twisted into a weapon against those deemed "abusers." This faux "liberalism" is a cacophony of self-serving pronouncements and performative outrage.

How did this happen? When did the Liberal, historically disloyal to any institution or mob, become so devoted to political and cultural crusades? When did liberalism become synonymous with moral righteousness, and conservatism with immorality?

The truth is, both sides can champion civil rights and individual liberty. Both can be religious or secular. Traditionalism is about preserving existing cultural norms, not inherently about hate or discrimination. Liberals, the free spirits, were never known for their puritanical leanings. They challenged boundaries, experimented with ideas, and embraced individuality.

True Liberals are weary of this "woke" ideology – its self-righteousness, its careerism, its dogmatic thinking. Liberals cherish the clash of ideas and the vibrant exchange of opposing viewpoints, conducted with respect and civility, not personal insults or demonization. The notion that everyone must think alike is antithetical to the very essence of liberalism.

As George Michael poignantly sings in "Freedom! '90," the liberal anthem: "All we have to see is I don't belong to you and you don't belong to me. Freedom! Hold on to my freedom...may not be what you want from me, that's the way its got to be" This starkly contrasts with the reality of today's self-righteous puritanical "liberals" who seem to constantly preach, "I just hope you understand sometimes the clothes do not make the man." Their hypocrisy undermines the very essence of true liberalism.
