Ghana's day of Glory!

Ghanas day of Glory!

"For a moment, there was only one Ghana, one people and one Black Star!"

I have never seen anything like it, certainly not in our recent history.

Even Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's
Independence Day declaration, for all its gravity and historicity, fade in color compared with the opulence of splendour exhibited at John Mahama's coronation.

The sight of many African heads of state (past and present) parading the Black Star Square in elegant stride was not only beautiful, it was an unnerving glory.

And what about the eclectic array of distinguished diplomats from the international community whose presence provided a befitting global perspective and symbolism to the success of our democratic experiment, the blemishes not withstanding?

From the rafters of the public space, the peeping, wondering eyes of thousands of Ghanaians who descended on the Black Star Square like soldier ants scanned the arriving dignitaries with enthusiasm, observing the unfolfing events from their vantage positions.

For a moment, there was only one Ghana, one people and one Black Star! Party colours faded into oblivion as the nation stood together, waving the Ghana flag, singing and dancing, cheering wildly at anything in sight--- including the birds --- and heralding a new dawn.

Gracious me! What a masterful use of the national colours of red, gold and green to serenade the ceremony in such eloquent harmony! The beauty and grandeur must have filled every Ghanaian, and indeed every African with joyful pride.

Here in the Black Star Square, Ghana made another history by swearing in her first female Vice President. When Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang first emerged as the surprise pick for the slot in 2020, not many people gave the ticket a dog's chance of survival.

But there she stood on the platform, gorgeous, majestic and altogether beautiful in her red tapestry. She was charting a new course for our women. A new dawn of possibility has arrived for the women of Ghana. It is their time.

But as historic as her elevation was, it was only an aperitif for the grand ceremony. Everyone waited for the main course. Surely, history would be fair to the people if they overlooked the significance of her investiture, for it was John Dramani Mahama that the people came to see. The much awaited 24 hour economy was here at last!

The President's speech was just fine. He hit the right notes, punched the right cords, said the right things but with negligible articulation errors that usually characterise such grand events. He is not Barack Obama!

But it was unpardonable not to make any reference to Nkrumah in such a high profile presentation, arguably the greatest speech of his life and presidency because of its significance.

Fortunately, big brother Tinubu captured Nkrumah's legacy exquisitely, probably even better than Mahama could have imagined or articulated, and in doing so, atoned for the crime.

Less l forget! Did you see the "borborbor" dance in the public space right after the event? When did such vigorous twerking and ferocious wriggling become part of our traditional "borborbor"dance? The world has left some of us behind.

Thank God Mr. Zuma had already left the square by then, for how could he not be tempted to fly those women to Kwazulu Natal for a twerkathon?
