Former Deputy Minister of Energy, Herbert Krapa, has called on the newly elected National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to prioritise effective energy sector management over attributing blame to the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
Mr. Krapa’s remarks come in response to allegations by John Jinapor, Co-Chairman of the Transition Team’s Energy and Natural Resources subcommittee.
Jinapor warned of imminent load shedding due to dwindling fuel stock. He accused the outgoing NPP government of leaving behind insufficient fuel reserves, raising concerns about potential disruptions in Ghana’s power supply.
Dismissing these claims, Herbert Krapa refuted the assertion that fuel stock shortages are to blame. He explained that load shedding typically arises from technical challenges, emergencies, or poor planning, and not from the alleged inadequacies mentioned by the incoming administration.
“The claim that the Akufo-Addo administration left inadequate fuel stock is simply untrue. Verifiable records show that light crude oil and heavy fuel oil were available for critical facilities like Cenpower and AKSA power plants,” Krapa stated.
In his response, the former Energy Minister urged the new government to focus on maintaining a stable power supply rather than engaging in “blame games.”
He emphasised the importance of proactive measures to ensure uninterrupted electricity.
“The responsibility of the new administration is to procure additional liquid fuel when necessary to complement gas supply and to plan competently to avert power disruptions. We did it, and they can do it too, if they are capable,” he remarked.
Herbert Krapa further criticised the NDC for what he described as needless finger-pointing, reiterating that the NPP successfully maintained a stable electricity supply through diligent planning and execution.
“The NDC government should get to work as we did and stop the blame games. That is not how we kept the lights on,” Krapa posted on Facebook.
As the NDC administration transitions into governance, the energy sector remains a critical area of focus, with both sides emphasising the need to prevent power supply interruptions.
