A Letter to the President-Elect: Transforming Ghana's Education Through a 24-Hour Economy

Dear Mr. President-Elect,

Your vision for a 24-hour economy, as outlined in your manifesto, has generated great hope among Ghanaians, particularly in the education sector. I write to propose actionable steps to implement this bold vision within the Ghana Education Service (GES), ensuring it delivers maximum impact for students, teachers, and the nation as a whole.

Your proposal for a 24-hour economy aligns perfectly with the pressing need to transform our education system. By extending the operational hours of schools, we can address challenges such as overcrowded classrooms, limited access to education, and the growing demand for vocational and technical skills. A well-planned shift-based system can ensure that existing resources are utilized efficiently while creating opportunities for more Ghanaians to pursue education.

To make this initiative successful, I suggest the following strategies:

1. Phased Implementation
Begin with pilot programs in urban areas or high-demand districts. These areas typically have the infrastructure and population density to support a shift-based education system. The outcomes of these pilots can then guide the national rollout.

2. Infrastructure Upgrades
Many schools lack the facilities needed to operate beyond the traditional school day. Immediate priorities should include adding classrooms, improving lighting, and ensuring security for evening and night shifts. Harnessing renewable energy sources like solar power can provide reliable electricity to support extended hours.

3. Teacher Incentives and Training
Teachers will be the backbone of this initiative. Offering attractive incentives for evening and night shifts, such as allowances or housing support, will motivate participation. Additionally, professional development programs should prepare teachers for managing diverse groups of learners and integrating technology into teaching.

4. Vocational and Adult Education Focus
The evening shifts can be dedicated to vocational training and adult education. This approach will equip the youth with practical skills for employment and provide adults an opportunity to enhance their qualifications, aligning with the broader goals of the 24-hour economy.
