Abigail Quartey, crowned WIBF Super Bantamweight Champion on November 25 after defeating the United Kingdom’s Sangeeta Birdi, says her triumph has fueled her ambition to achieve even more in her boxing career.

In an exclusive interview, Abigail revealed that inconsistent training schedules, often due to a lack of activity, have posed challenges in her journey. However, this latest victory has reignited her drive and commitment to the sport.

She expressed gratitude to her coach, Ebenezer Adjei, affectionately known as “Coach Killer,” for his guidance and support, which played a pivotal role in her success. Abigail also highlighted the importance of her achievement in inspiring other female boxers in Ghana.

Interestingly, the champion shared that she draws motivation from within, as she has no nickname, idol, or favorite boxer. “I see myself as my own inspiration,” she said.

Abigail also called on key sports stakeholders, including the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) Women’s Commission, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), and the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), to acknowledge her accomplishment and provide the necessary support. She believes such recognition will encourage other athletes, particularly women in boxing, to aim high.

Now boasting a professional record of 10 bouts, 9 wins, and just one loss, Abigail views her recent defeat in the UAE, which occurred a week before her WIBF title win, as a learning experience. “The future looks bright, and I’m ready for more success,” she said confidently.

At the Omashi TV studio, Abigail received blessings from Naa Yarley Achia Bronie I, popularly known as Yarkor Annan or “Yarkor Chavez,” Ghana’s first female professional boxer. Yarkor advised Abigail to remain focused and obedient to her coaches, emphasizing the significance of discipline in a boxer’s career.

Despite boxing's contribution of 11 world champions to Ghana’s sporting legacy, fans and athletes alike feel neglected by the government. Abigail’s story is a reminder of the sport’s potential and the need for greater investment and recognition.
