Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has underscored the critical role of technology in bridging Ghana’s poverty gap, emphasizing that a robust digital economy is essential for the country’s development.
Speaking at the launch of Ghana’s Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (GDEP) on Thursday, November 28, in Accra, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful highlighted that technological mastery is key to eliminating inequalities and fostering growth.
“At its core, the poverty gap is a technology gap,” she said, quoting President Akufo-Addo’s assertion in a 2018 speech. “The mastery of technology is what separates developed countries from developing ones. This is the gap we have to bridge.”
She explained that the new policy, which focuses on universal access, digital government, skills development, entrepreneurship, and emerging technologies, is designed to enhance connectivity and inclusivity.
“Digital technologies are no longer a luxury but a necessity, and this policy will ensure every Ghanaian, regardless of social or geographic status, benefits from this transformation,” she added.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful called for greater collaboration across sectors, including partnerships with private entities, to address connectivity challenges and extend digital access to underserved communities.
“This is a collective effort to position Ghana as a leader in Africa’s digital future and unlock economic opportunities for all,” she remarked.
The policy focuses on five broad areas: universal access and connectivity, digital government, digital skills and research, digital entrepreneurship, and data and emerging technologies.
