The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has mourned the passing of farmer and politician Akua Donkor.
The founder and presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), according to her family, passed on Monday, October 28, 2024. She was pronounced dead at the Ridge Hospital, Accra, having been transferred there from the Nsawam Government Hospital.
According to her last child, the head of family will in due time explain the circumstances surrounding Madam Donkor’s shocking passing. She was 72.
"The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has learnt with grief the shocking demise of Madam Akua Donkor," a Tuesday, October 29, statement by the governing party, signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said.
"After emerging on the national political limelight in 2012, Madam Akua Donkor demonstrated fearless and dedicated passion to matters of national discourse, refusing to be silenced by her apparent lack of formal education as she often chose to express herself in the Akan dialect."
"Even before her ascension to the national political landscape, Madam Akua Donkor had served as an Assembly Member for her locality on several occasions. She was a celebrated farmer who championed the rights of farmers, women, and the marginalized in society. As painful as her demise is, she joins the privileged few of trailblazing Ghanaian women who defied all odds to contest for President, the highest office of the land," the NPP eulogised.
"The NPP is of the upmost belief that her life should serve as an inspiration to all Ghanaians, that regardless of gender, educational status, age, class and religion, we can all make meaningful and impactful contributions to the development of mother Ghana. The Party is accordingly entreating all Ghanaian women in particular, to aspire to greater heights by the comforting assurance that if Madam Akua Donkor could do it, then all Ghanaian women can also do it."
"We take solace in her legacy of fearless activism and dedication to matters of our dear country and extend the NPP's deepest condolences to the bereaved family, particularly her children, members of the Ghana Freedom Party, and the good people of Afigya Kwabre and all Ghanaians at large, for this great loss," the statement concluded.
