Professor Ransford Gyampo, a Political Science expert at the University of Ghana, foresees a looming confrontation between the legislative body and Judiciary branches of government.
Professor Gyampo’s prediction follows recent actions by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, and a Supreme Court ruling that has stirred concerns about the balance of power between these two arms of government.
Speaking during a discussion on TV3’s Key Points show, as monitored by this portal, Professor Gyampo pointed to a potential conflict sparked by the Supreme Court’s decision to declare certain parliamentary seats vacant. This ruling arose from legal and constitutional challenges faced by some Members of Parliament (MPs), which questioned their continued eligibility to hold office.
The Supreme Court’s ruling, grounded in constitutional interpretations regarding the status of MPs, has caused unease among lawmakers. In response, there is speculation that Speaker Bagbin may take a firm stance, defending the independence of Parliament and possibly rejecting the implications of the ruling.
"The stage is set for an unnecessary showdown between the Legislature and Judiciary," Gyampo warned, suggesting that the Speaker could view the court’s actions as an overreach and might challenge the judiciary’s authority, setting the two branches on a collision course.
