We Indeed Bleed While We Lead

We Indeed Bleed While We Lead

On the 6th of March this year, I had just returned from the gym and finished showering when I heard a knock at my door. Peeking through the peephole, I was taken back to see none other than the Reverend of my district circuit, accompanied by his wife. They were at my doorstep for an unannounced visit.

What surprised me even more wasn’t just the impromptu nature of the visit, but the fact that they were making rounds through the entire district, visiting every member under their care. In my assembly alone, there are over 100 congregants.

The central assembly boasts over 300 members, and the district has close to 10 assemblies, each with no fewer than 50 people. By my estimation, the Reverend and his wife were looking at visiting over 200 homes that day alone.

Now, imagine the physical and emotional toll that must have taken. Despite the overwhelming task, they chose to make these visits, driven by love and the desire to know how their congregation was faring. This was just a glimpse into the sacrifice and dedication leaders make—often bleeding while they lead.

While we often focus on pastoral roles, leadership challenges exist everywhere. Have you ever considered the burden of the first-born child in a family? First-borns are expected to be role models, often thrust into leadership roles from an early age. In some cases, the responsibility starts when they’re as young as a year old, tasked with taking care of younger siblings and, ultimately, held accountable for their mistakes.

They are expected to be blameless, to carry themselves with perfection for the world to see, and often to take on financial burdens and leadership roles in their own workplaces.

This weight of leadership can be overwhelming, often leading to depression and burnout. Firstborn, like leaders everywhere, are not allowed the flexibility to falter. They are expected to always have things under control.

Leadership, in general, is never an easy task.

Hats off to anyone who has truly experienced its harsh realities. You may be doing your best, but there are always others working behind the scenes who may mismanage your efforts, undoing all your hard work.

Even when leaders pour their heart and resources into solving problems, they are often met with intense scrutiny and criticism. It takes extraordinary grace to remain standing after facing such backlash. Ironically, if the very critics were placed in the leader’s shoes, they’d often be unable to handle even half of the responsibilities they so quickly judge.

This all goes to show that leadership is far from easy. Some believe leadership is an innate quality, while others argue that proper training can shape great leaders. Whether inbuilt or learned, leadership requires strength, humility, and resilience—qualities that are essential in all aspects of life If you aspire to a leadership role, there’s one key principle to remember: successful leaders have the heart of a servant. They are ready to serve, to lead with humility, and to listen—whether the feedback is useful or not.

Great leaders don’t come off as controlling but are firm in their decisions. They know how to handle insubordination with wisdom, ensuring that the offender learns without feeling disgraced.

Leadership demands tremendous dedication, sacrifice, and determination.

Many leaders sacrifice personal time, often losing precious moments with family. This can strain relationships, with some marriages even ending in divorce. But is that the full picture of leadership? Is it all sacrifice and no reward? Are leaders destined to be overworked, drained, and facing constant negativity? Must their marriages always fall apart?
