The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has said it will review the petition submitted by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) requesting an independent forensic audit of the country's voters' register.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, September 17, the EC said it received the NDC's petition at the end of their demonstration the same day.
"The Commission will review the petition and provide its response in the coming days," said Samuel Tettey, the EC's Deputy Chairman for Operations.
Mr. Tettey assured the public that the process of producing the final register is still at an early stage.
“The Commission is mindful that the Voters Register is the bedrock of credible, fair and transparent Elections. We assure the NDC and all Stakeholders of our avowed commitment to delivering a credible and robust Final Register ahead of the December 2024 Elections," he added.
The EC said its doors remain open for further engagement with the NDC on their concerns.
The NDC's petition stemmed from alleged irregularities uncovered in the provisional voters' register for the 2024 general elections.
In its petition, the party cited over 243,000 unauthorized voter transfers, 15,000 untraceable voter records, and missing voter data.
The NDC is demanding an independent forensic audit of the register and its IT systems.
It also wants all unauthorized transfers reversed and a re-exhibition of the register after the audit.
This, the party argues, is crucial to preserving the credibility of Ghana's elections.
