The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Ghanaians of its commitment to delivering a credible voters' register for the 2024 general elections despite concerns raised by the opposition party.
In a statement issued in response to an NDC petition presented after a demonstration at the EC headquarters on Tuesday, Deputy Chairman of Operations Samuel Tettey said "The Commission wishes to assure the General Public that the process of producing the Final Register is in its early stages."
He added: "The Commission is mindful that the Voters Register is the bedrock of credible, fair and transparent Elections. We assure the NDC and all Stakeholders of our avowed commitment to delivering a credible and robust Final Register ahead of the December 2024 Elections."
The EC has promised to review the NDC's petition and provide a formal response in the coming days. Meanwhile, it says its "doors remain open" and it looks forward to engaging with the NDC on their concerns.
The NDC petition, which was presented to the EC following the uncovering of "alarming irregularities, discrepancies and unauthorised manipulations" in the 2024 provisional voters' register, is seeking an independent forensic audit of the register and its IT systems.
It cited issues such as over 243,000 unauthorized voter transfers, 15,000 unidentifiable voter registration paths, deletion of close to 4,000 registered voters and corrupted data files missing voter information.
The NDC argued these discrepancies undermine the credibility of the upcoming elections and is demanding the EC act swiftly to preserve the country's democracy and stability by conducting a forensic audit in collaboration with stakeholders.
