‘Why not go to court for redress? — Ahiagbah quizzes NDC over voter roll audit demonstration

The National Communications Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah has questioned why the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demonstrating against the Electoral Commission (EC) instead of going to court over its demands for a forensic audit of the 2024 voter register.

According to him, at the time the ruling party found discrepancies in the register, it used the lawcourts to push for the many electoral reforms it championed.

"Why is the NDC not going to court to seek redress or to compel the Electoral Commission to take up their demand if it is to improve the integrity of our electoral system?

“This is the avenue that the NPP used to advance the many reforms part of our electoral laws, rules, and regulations today. I fancy the court option because it works," wrote Ahiagbah in a post via X on Tuesday, September 17.

The statement comes after the NDC staged nationwide demonstrations on Tuesday to press home their demands for a forensic audit of the provisional voter roll.

The party has cited alleged irregularities including unauthorized voter transfers, missing voter data, and corrupt files in their nationwide petition to the EC.

In the petition, the NDC noted that over 243,540 illegal voter transfers were uncovered in the 2024 provisional voter register.

Additionally, the party identified over 15,000 instances of unidentifiable voter registration paths raising concerns of potential fake voter registrations.

Nearly 4,000 previously registered voters were also deleted from the register without explanation, says the opposition party.

The NDC is demanding an independent forensic audit of the voter roll and its IT system to uncover the full extent of the irregularities.

It also wants a re-exhibition of the voter roll after the audit and measures to prevent future manipulation of the register.
