We may trigger recall of Parliament to compel EC to audit voter register

Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has indicated that the Minority in Parliament may pursue a recall of Parliament to compel the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct an audit of the voters' register ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Dr. Forson emphasized that the audit is essential to addressing irregularities and ensuring that the elections are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.

He raised these concerns while speaking at a nationwide demonstration organized by the NDC in Accra.

The protest was aimed at drawing attention to alleged issues with the voter’s register.

According to Dr. Forson, tampering with the register could undermine the credibility of the electoral process, a matter that the NDC cannot afford to overlook.

Dr. Forson further stressed the importance of addressing these discrepancies before the elections to safeguard the integrity of the democratic process.

He argued that failure to audit the register would raise doubts about the legitimacy of the elections and could lead to mistrust in the EC’s ability to oversee a transparent election.

The NDC's leadership has expressed its determination to press for reforms within the EC and ensure that all concerns are addressed well ahead of the election.

The party believes that taking these steps now is crucial to preventing potential disputes and safeguarding the credibility of the 2024 polls.

"We believe that the voter's register must be audited. The level of tampering we've observed so far makes it impossible to proceed without a proper review.

"This audit will help us understand the extent of the issue and fix the system,” he said.

“In my own constituency, we’ve uncovered the addition of about 3,000 names in the transfer register and several instances of multiple names. In total, the register has been bloated by roughly 5,000 names. This raises serious concerns, and we need Parliament to intervene,” Dr Forson said.
