Independent presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen has joined calls for a forensic audit of Ghana's voter register to address doubts over its integrity ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Speaking on Accra-based JoyNews on Monday, September 16, Mr. Kyerematen said only an extensive audit can remove reasonable doubts about the register's credibility and enhance confidence in the Electoral Commission (EC).
"For the sake of ensuring the integrity of the elections, to respond to the specific cases that have been identified about irregularities in the voters’ register. It only goes to enhance the credibility of the commission," he stated.
The founder and leader of Moment for Change cited the EC's rejection of the opposition NDC's similar demand and insisted an audit was necessary regardless of the Commission's assurances.
"Yes. It [ forensic audit] has to be. I am not sure why there should be a resistance to that. Because, yes the Electoral Commission has indicated that they have responded to those comments," he noted.
Mr. Kyerematen argued that only an audit can assure citizens and parties of a credible register for the upcoming polls.
"But we have to put all reasonable doubt. There is a need to have a credible voters' register. So if there is an indication that there is still doubt associated with the electoral register, then let us allow an extensive comprehensive audit, which can be done without any difficulty," he said.
"It is only through an audit that this could happen," the 2024 contender stated emphatically.
His comments back the National Democratic Congress (NDC) request for a forensic audit of the register, which the EC has rejected.
To press home its demands, the main opposition party has planned to embark on a nationwide demonstration against the EC on Tuesday, September 17.
