Ghana’s Democracy Under Siege: The Electoral Commission’s Plot to Rig the 2024 Elections

Ghana's democracy is facing an existential threat, orchestrated by none other than Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), and her deputies. In a coordinated effort, they are actively working to subvert the December 2024 elections, using tactics that blatantly favour the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and undermine the very principles of a free and fair electoral process.

The ongoing voter exhibition exercise has exposed the latest in a series of deliberate actions aimed at rigging the elections. Thousands of voters, particularly those in opposition strongholds, have been arbitrarily transferred to new polling stations without their knowledge or consent. This is a calculated move to confuse and disenfranchise voters who are likely to support the opposition, making it more difficult for them to cast their ballots. Such actions are not isolated incidents—they are part of a broader strategy to manipulate the electoral outcome in favour of the ruling party.

Further compounding the issue, the EC delayed handing over copies of the voter register to opposition parties until just a day before the exhibition exercise. This deliberate delay left the opposition with virtually no time to scrutinize the register and identify the widespread irregularities, including the inclusion of ghost names. The presence of these ghost names on the register undermines its credibility and casts serious doubt on the integrity of the entire electoral process.

Jean Mensa’s complicity in this plot is made even more troubling by the fact that she has managed to avoid accountability for her actions during the 2020 elections. At that time, despite failing to declare the winner with a single, clear result, she evaded scrutiny through the courts, protected by a compromised judicial system. Now, emboldened by her previous escape from justice, Mensa is doubling down on her efforts to manipulate the electoral process, this time with the active collaboration of her deputies.

The Ghanaian people must be fully aware of the dangerous game being played with their democracy. These actions are not just violations of electoral laws—they are deliberate attempts to destroy the democratic fabric of the nation. Jean Mensa and her deputies are knowingly pushing Ghana towards chaos and potential civil unrest by subverting the electoral process to keep the ruling party in power at all costs.

The consequences for such treasonous acts must be severe. These individuals should be prosecuted for electoral fraud, abuse of power, and subversion of democracy. The penalties should include long-term imprisonment, the confiscation of all assets gained through their corruption, and a permanent ban from holding any public office. If the Ghanaian judiciary cannot deliver justice, then the international community must step in. The imposition of sanctions, travel bans, and the freezing of assets abroad should all be on the table to hold these individuals accountable for their betrayal of the nation.

The stakes for Ghana could not be higher. The upcoming elections are not just about choosing the next president; they are about defending the very future of Ghanaian democracy. Every Ghanaian must stand up to protect their right to a free and fair election, and to ensure that those who attempt to destroy this democracy face the full wrath of justice.

Jean Mensa and her collaborators should know that their actions have not gone unnoticed, and they will not go unpunished. The world is watching, and the Ghanaian people will not allow their democracy to be hijacked by a few individuals driven by greed and the lust for power. The consequences of this betrayal will be severe and inescapable. Ghana's democracy is not for sale, and those who attempt to destroy it will find themselves remembered in history as its enemies.
