The Electoral Commission’s Silence: A Concern for Democratic Integrity- Stanley Agbozo

As a concerned citizen, Stanley Agbozo, feel the need to address a pressing issue that threatens the integrity of our democratic process. Recently, a man was arrested in possession of a Biometric Verification Device (BVD) allegedly belonging to the Electoral Commission (EC). This incident raises significant concerns about the security of our electoral process, but even more troubling is the EC's silence in the aftermath of this discovery. In a democracy, transparency and accountability are non-negotiable, especially when it comes to institutions responsible for overseeing elections.

The unauthorized possession of a BVD is not an isolated incident but part of a worrying pattern of security breaches that undermine public confidence in the electoral process. In 2020, similar concerns were raised when allegations surfaced that some biometric devices were tampered with, leading to discrepancies in voter verification. Additionally, there were instances where misplaced or faulty equipment caused significant delays and confusion during voter registration exercises .

In 2016, a similar case occurred when unauthorized individuals were found with voters' data, leading to widespread criticism of the EC's handling of sensitive electoral materials. Despite these alarming occurrences, the EC’s responses have often been slow and insufficient, further eroding public trust. The Commission's current silence over the recent arrest only adds to the growing concern that these incidents are not being taken seriously enough.

The integrity of our electoral process is the bedrock of our democracy, and any breach in this integrity should be addressed with the utmost urgency. The EC’s failure to promptly inform the public about this incident and outline the steps being taken to secure our electoral system is deeply concerning. This silence leaves room for speculation and distrust, which can have far-reaching consequences for the legitimacy of the upcoming elections.

The EC must take immediate action to restore public confidence. This includes providing a detailed account of how the BVD came into unauthorized hands, the measures being taken to prevent such incidents in the future, and assurances that the upcoming elections will be conducted in a manner that is free, fair, and transparent. Anything less than full transparency will only serve to deepen the public's mistrust in the electoral process and threaten the stability of our democracy.

To conclude, I urge the Electoral Commission to break its silence and address this issue with the seriousness it deserves. The people of Ghana deserve a transparent and accountable electoral process, and it is the duty of the EC to provide that.
