Choosing the Right Leader: The Stakes for Ghana in 2024

Feature Article Choosing the Right Leader: The Stakes for Ghana in 2024
FRI, 16 AUG 2024

In the run-up to the December 2024 elections, Ghanaians face a critical decision that could shape the country's future for decades. The choice of leadership is paramount, especially when the stakes involve the highest office in the land. The contrast between former President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia offers a clear picture of what is at stake, and it is vital that citizens are fully informed about the characters, motivations, and potential consequences of their choices.

John Mahama: The Experienced Statesman

John Mahama’s political career is one of steady and genuine public service. He has risen through the ranks, from being a Member of Parliament to serving as Vice President and later as President. His time in office was marked by significant infrastructural development, including the completion of major projects such as the Ridge Hospital, the University of Ghana Medical Centre, and numerous roads and educational institutions across the country. Despite facing challenges during his presidency, Mahama has remained steadfast in his vision for Ghana's development.

His recent exoneration by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in the Airbus scandal further reinforces his integrity. Unlike others who have been mired in controversy and left unanswered questions, Mahama’s ability to clear his name and continue to serve the country speaks volumes about his leadership qualities. His experience as a former president is a significant asset, providing him with the insight and understanding necessary to navigate the complex challenges Ghana faces today. His plans for the future include deepening economic reforms, addressing youth unemployment, and continuing his legacy of infrastructural development, all of which position him as a leader who is both visionary and capable.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia: A Man Driven by Ambition, Not Vision

In stark contrast, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's political ascent appears less about public service and more about personal and familial enrichment. Despite his technocratic background, Bawumia’s sudden rise in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been marred by numerous controversies that call into question his suitability for the presidency.

Bawumia, who initially joined politics with no apparent ambition to lead the nation, has packed the corridors of power with his close family members, many of whom have been implicated in corruption and questionable deals. His direct brother, for instance, has been awarded several lucrative government contracts through sole-sourcing, bypassing competitive bidding processes that are designed to ensure transparency and value for money. This nepotistic approach not only undermines public trust but also suggests that Bawumia’s interest in the presidency may be driven by a desire to protect and expand these networks of personal and familial gain.

Moreover, his current push for the presidency seems to be more of an afterthought, spurred on by party insiders with their own narrow interests rather than a genuine desire to serve the nation. This raises serious concerns about what kind of president he would be—a leader more concerned with maintaining power for its own sake, rather than for the benefit of the people.

The Dangers of Choosing the Wrong Leader

The risks of electing a leader without a genuine commitment to public service cannot be overstated. Leaders like Bawumia, who seem more interested in personal gain than in the welfare of the nation, pose a serious threat to Ghana’s democratic foundations. Such leaders are likely to perpetuate corruption, mismanagement, and cronyism, leading to economic stagnation and social unrest. They lack the vision and integrity required to steer the country through difficult times, and their governance is often marked by short-termism and a lack of accountability.

In contrast, a leader like John Mahama, who has both the experience and the track record of serving with integrity, offers a path forward that is based on a commitment to national development and the well-being of all Ghanaians. His return to the presidency could provide the stability and visionary leadership that Ghana needs to navigate the complex challenges of the 21st century.

A Call to Vigilance
As the 2024 elections approach, Ghanaians must be vigilant in choosing their leaders. The stakes are too high to entrust the presidency to someone whose motivations and track record are questionable. The future of Ghana depends on electing a leader with the experience, integrity, and vision to move the country forward—not one who sees the presidency as a means to enrich himself and his inner circle.

John Mahama stands out as the candidate who embodies these qualities, offering a proven track record and a clear vision for the future. Ghanaians would do well to consider these factors carefully as they head to the polls, for the choice they make will determine the direction of the nation for years to come.
