Professor Kofi Agyekum has joined the debate surrounding Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh's recent remarks about Ghana's first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
During his official unveiling as the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) running mate in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, made statements that many found disrespectful to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
He said, “Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”
Reacting to these comments on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show, Professor Kofi Agyekum, Head of Linguistics at the University of Ghana, questioned why NAPO would make such derogatory remarks about Nkrumah.
He pointed out that criticizing Nkrumah is tantamount to criticizing the many Ghanaians who have benefited from his projects.
To Prof. Agyekum, Dr. Opoku Prempeh's statements were inappropriate and called for the NPP leadership to take corrective action.
"Sit NAPO down and train him... This should be a lesson for him!" he exclaimed.
He advised that if NAPO struggles with public speaking, his handlers should prepare his speeches for him to avoid more controversies.
