NPP and Empty Rethorics

During the inauguration of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate to their flagbearer and his introduction to the Asantehene, a region known to be their stronghold, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Opoku Prempeh made claims that starkly contrast with the reality faced by Ghanaians.

It is imperative to highlight the glaring discrepancies between their rhetoric and the true state of affairs. The current administration has overseen an unprecedented rise in national debt, ballooning from 120 billion cedis to a staggering 650 billion cedis, despite substantial increases in revenue from new oil blocks and higher tax income. Yet, what do Ghanaians have to show for it?

Under their watch, inflation has soared, unemployment is rampant, and the cost of living has become unbearably high. The Bank of Ghana has been forced to print money, in direct violation of constitutional mandates, merely to sustain their reckless spending. This has culminated in an economic crisis so severe that the government had no choice but to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund, leading to a debt restructuring that has devastated bondholders.

Their claims of development and progress ring hollow when scrutinized. The much-touted Free Senior High School policy, while ambitious, has been poorly executed and stands as a solitary, unconvincing achievement in a landscape marred by economic mismanagement. The audacity to compare Akufo-Addo’s tenure to that of Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, is not only laughable but also an insult to the legacy of genuine progress and visionary leadership.

In stark contrast, former President John Dramani Mahama, with a fraction of the resources, achieved monumental feats. With just 52 billion cedis, Mahama resolved the crippling energy crisis, constructed new interchanges, and developed numerous regional, district, and municipal hospitals. Under his leadership, Terminal 3 at Kotoka International Airport was built, setting a new standard in the sub-Saharan region and enhancing Ghana’s international reputation.

The narrative that Mahama lacks new ideas is patently false. His administration’s track record of tangible, impactful projects speaks volumes about his capability to lead and innovate. Alongside his running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Mahama offers a vision grounded in practical solutions and a deep understanding of the challenges facing Ghanaians. Opoku-Agyemang’s focus on education reform and inclusive policies further underscores their commitment to genuine national development.

Looking forward, Mahama has laid out an ambitious plan for the future, including the introduction of a 24-hour economy. This visionary initiative aims to maximize productivity, create jobs, and boost economic activity around the clock. By leveraging technology and fostering a business-friendly environment, Mahama's plan will position Ghana as a regional economic powerhouse and significantly improve the quality of life for all Ghanaians.

It is time to reject the hollow rhetoric and broken promises of the current administration. Ghanaians deserve leaders who are not only capable but also honest about the state of the nation and ready to implement real, effective solutions. John Dramani Mahama and Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang have demonstrated their ability to deliver, and it is clear that they are the leaders Ghana needs to navigate the turbulent times ahead and steer the nation towards a prosperous future.
