Accusations that former President and 2024 NDC flagbearer John Mahama has received more than ¢32 million in state funds since leaving office in 2017 have been denied by his aide.
In a statement via X on Thursday, July 4, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, spokesperson for Mr. Mahama’s 2024 campaign, described the claims as “another unintelligent lie from the Bawumia and Akufo-Addo government.”
She stated: “Mr Mahama has not received from the State the amounts indicated in the ridiculously false claims. As he has repeatedly stated, his only benefit from the State is his constitutionally deserving monthly pension payable to all former presidents, including President John Agyekum Kufour.”
Her comments come in response to allegations made by Ernest Kofi Owusu Bempah, Deputy Director of Communications for the governing NPP.
Mr. Owusu Bempah alleged that Mahama has received approximately ¢18 million as salary and end-of-service benefits and an additional ¢14 million as ex gratia payment since 2017.
However, Mahama’s spokesperson rejected the allegations, saying the former president “operates from a private office, paying monthly rent.”
She added that the governing NPP “is the most corrupt in the history of our country, plunging Ghanaians into unprecedented hardship and poverty.”
