The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the Amenfi East Constituency, Ernest Frimpong has been granted bail by the Tarkwa Police Command in the Western Region.
Mr. Frimpong was released on Wednesday evening after being questioned by the police regarding a viral video that shows Mr. Frimpong allegedly encouraging illegal miners to retaliate against any military or security personnel attempting to prevent their ‘galamsey’ activities.
In the video, he reportedly assured the miners of protection from himself, the MCE, and the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, who was also present at the meeting.
Mr. Frimpong has denied the allegations, stating that his comments were misinterpreted and not intended to support illegal mining or incite violence against military personnel.
He emphasized that his remarks were taken out of context from a two-hour discussion with artisanal small-scale miners.
The Municipal Chief Executive of Amenfi East, Mr. Frederick Korankye, has described the statements attributed to Mr. Frimpong “unfortunate.”
In response, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) issued a statement warning the public against attacking soldiers, emphasizing that such actions would constitute a serious offence.
