The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has served a rejoinder to former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu demanding that he withdraws 'false' claims made against the Speaker within 7 days or face legal action.
In a statement issued by the Speaker's Director of Communications Peter Bamfo on Tuesday, May 28, the office notes that it has taken notice of a "malicious and false publication in the media attributed to Mr. Martin Amidu."
According to the statement, Mr. Amidu had claimed in publications that the Speaker of Parliament had secretly met with President Nana Akufo-Addo in Dubai, United Arab Emirates before the rejection of the 2022 budget statement in Parliament.
Martin Amidu had said in his article "Asiedu Nketiah and John Mahama, did your self-confessed ... Speaker of Parliament not meet the President in Dubai in 2021 before he returned to Parliament to turn a closed eye to his own determination that rejected the 2022 Budget Statement ad Economic Policy of Government?"
However, the Speaker's office says this claim by Mr. Amidu is "false, baseless and unfounded, and should be treated with the contempt it deserves."
The Rt. Hon. Speaker has thus requested Mr. Amidu to publicly withdraw his statements and apologize within 7 days or face further legal action to vindicate his reputation.
"The failure of M.r Amidu to adhere to this request would leave the Rt. Hon. Speaker to no other option than to take al steps necessary within his rights to vindicate his name," the statement from the Speaker's office said.
