Ghana, ROSATOM deepen cooperation on nuclear energy

The State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) of Russia has commenced the construction of a fleet of Floating Nuclear Energy to supply power to Ghana's grid through a power purchase agreement.

Disclosing this during a round table discussion with Ghana's Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, in South Africa on Monday, the Chief Executive Officer of ROSATOM, Mr Ryan Collyer, said Russia is very committed to this project.

That, he said, is part of Russia's effort to strengthen its cooperation with Ghana.

“We are very committed to this project in Ghana and we want to ensure that this cooperation works” the CEO said. We are also very committed to our Floating Nuclear Power Plant efforts, all in the bid to strengthen the cooperation with Ghana”

Mr Collyer requested the Minister for Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to assist ROSATOM in finding a Ghanaian industry partner for a long-term agreement.

On his part, the Energy Minister said diplomatic ties between Ghana and Russia started long ago, adding that Ghana’s quest for oil discovery was first led by Russia.

He said Ghana has shown through participation and funding that it is committed to the Nuclear Power Programme.

Dr Prempeh said Ghana’s main preoccupation is funding and that the country is making an effort to attract the same.

Ghana signed an initial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ROSATOM in 2015 on nuclear cooperation which includes design and construction of nuclear power plants for the production of electricity and water desalination, nuclear research reactors and atomic particle accelerators, among others.

ROSATOM recently proposed to Ghana to construct a Nuclear Power Plant in respect of which last information was sent to Nuclear Power Ghana on 13th October 2023.
