The Trade Union Congress (TUC) in solidarity with the Ghana Mine Workers’ Union (GMWU) has issued a strong warning to Sunon Asogli, a power generation company over its refusal to reinstate three sacked employees.

Speaking at a press conference held on Thursday, June 1 at the TUC Conference Hall, Accra, Dr. Yaw Baah, the Secretary General of the TUC emphasised the urgency of the matter and cautioned both Sunon Asogli and the government to take the concerns of Organised Labour with all seriousness.

Mr. Yaw Baah said, “We want to warn them that we are giving them this chance that Organised Labour is speaking and they better listen. And this message is not only going to Sunon Asogli. It is also going to the President of Ghana and his government so they better listen to Organised Labour otherwise they know what will happen.”

TUC in the last few months has been fighting for the reinstatement of 3 local union leaders of the Ghana Mineworkers' Union working for Sunon Asogli.

The three were sacked for exercising their fundamental rights to form and join a trade union of their choice, as guaranteed by the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).

Despite various engagements with the government through the Ministry of Labour and Employment Relations to get Sunon Asogli to reverse the illegal sacking of the three workers, the managers of the company based in Kpone has refused to reinstate the workers.

At the TUC’s press conference on Thursday, Dr. Baah said, “I don’t have to even mention names. So comrades, because this is about the third or fourth time we are discussing this issue, we’re not going to waste your time. Those who should listen, should listen - and not only listen, they should hear us that we’re giving them time.”

He has given the power company up to June 26 to resolve the matter or face their wrath.

"We're giving them until the 26th of June to reinstate our three colleagues, put an end to the ongoing intimidation, and allow the unionisation process to proceed," Dr. Baah declared.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Dr. Baah warned that failure to comply with the TUC's demands by the specified deadline would result in further action from Organised Labour.

He stated, “We’re giving them up to 26th of June to get our three guys back to work and stop all that intimidation going on and allow the Union to finish with the process of unionisation.

“If that doesn’t happen by the 26th of this month, they’ll hear from us,” Mr. Baah warned.

He however did not elaborate on the next step of action.
