The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) says the refusal by management of Wesley Girls Senior High School to heed the directive of the Ghana Education Service to allow Muslim students to observe Ramadan fasting sets a bad precedence for others.
The Coalition has called for calm for the peaceful resolution of the impasse between the authorities of Wesley Girls High School and the Ghana Education Service (GES) after the school’s decision to stick to the ban on fasting.
In the last few weeks, the decision of the headmistress of the school to ban Muslim students from fasting during the Ramadan period has been heavily criticized especially by Muslim groups.
Although the GES after meeting with stakeholders directed the school to back down and allow willing students to fast, the management of school refused and remain defiant to the directives.
GNECC believes calm is needed to ensure the matter is resolved peacefully.
“We believe that each party in their respective viewpoints do wish the best for the child concerned. But this can only be done in the midst of calm. History has shown that, whenever decisions were made out of turbulence, other problems were given birth to,” part of a press release from GNECC reads.
It continues, “It is also our concern that the school in question did not heed the GES directive because we believe this might set a precedence for other schools to disregard the Supervisory Agency in other matters. No matter how genuine their traditions and the welfare of the student they have at heart, we think they could dialogue a better solution before making a final verdict.”
In the foregoing, GNECC wants all stakeholders especially Policy Makers and Implementers to agree on developing National Policies to serve as a guide to the issue and similar issues to ensure that all stakeholders adhere to the resolution in the best interest of the child.
