A veiled third-term agenda orchestrated by President Mahama himself — Nana B

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused President John Dramani Mahama of being linked to what it describes as a “hidden third-term agenda” aimed at enabling him to contest the 2028 presidential election.

The party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, made the allegation during a press conference, following ongoing legal proceedings before the Supreme Court seeking an interpretation of constitutional provisions on presidential term limits.

According to Nana B, the legal action seeking clarity on Article 66 of the 1992 Constitution is politically motivated and forms part of an attempt to create an avenue for President Mahama to seek another term in office beyond the two-term limit.

He claimed that although President Mahama has publicly distanced himself from the matter, the development was connected to efforts to extend his presidency.

“A veiled third-term agenda orchestrated by President Mahama himself. He is the one behind it. You ask President Mahama, ‘Oh, I am not interested, it’s only the Supreme Court. There are some applications before the Supreme Court. Whatever the Supreme Court decides, it is not my issue. As for me, I’m only committed to my third term.’ We must fight against this,” Nana B stated.

The NPP executive further cautioned the judiciary against what he described as any attempt to adopt a new interpretation of Article 66, warning that it could have serious consequences for Ghana’s political stability.

“Any attempt to introduce any weird interpretation regarding Article 66 would throw Ghana into political turmoil. Two terms is two terms. It is dangerous,” he said.

Nana B also alleged that some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were involved in attempts to pursue a third-term bid for President Mahama, claiming that the cases before the Supreme Court were politically motivated.

“And trust me, I can tell you on authority that His Excellency the President knows about this. He is behind this. And all of these applications before the Supreme Court, they are politically sponsored,” he alleged.

The NPP’s comments come after a case was filed at the Supreme Court seeking clarification on the interpretation of Article 66, which outlines the tenure of office of the President.

The suit, filed by Ganiwu Alhassan, a teacher from Kpandai in the Northern Region, is seeking the court’s determination on whether a person who has served two separate and non-consecutive presidential terms can contest the presidency again.

President Mahama has previously stated that he has no intention of seeking a third term and has affirmed his commitment to respecting the constitutional provisions governing presidential tenure.
