It is turning out that all sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) in the North East Region (NER) will not return to Parliament when the next batch of parliamentarians are sworn in on January 7, 2021 for the 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

The NPP were the biggest winners in the region where Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia comes from.

The seats were three each for NDC and the NPP in the newly-created region after the 2016 election but in 2020 the NPP has been able to add one more to bring it to four seats as against the NDC's two.

The NPP now controls Chereponi, Walewale (Dr. Bawumia's hometown), Yagaba Kubori and Yunyoo; while the NDC now controls Bunkpurugu and Nalerigu/Gambaga.

The biggest surprise came from Nalerigu-Gambaga Constituency where the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, who is the incumbent, lost to NDC candidate Alhaji Baba Issifu Seidu.

The incumbent NDC MP for Yagaba-Kubore, Alhaji Abdul-Rauf Tanko Ibrahim, was defeated by the Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Mustapha Ussif, who reclaimed the seat.

North East Regional Minister, Solomon Namliit Boar, who is the incumbent MP for Bunkpurugu, lost his seat to Abed Bandim, a former staff of the National Communications Authority.

In the Chereponi Constituency, which had NDC MP Samuel Abdulai Jabanyite as the incumbent, had been unseated by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area Tahidu Abdul-Razak.

Former Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu's brother, Joseph Bipoba Naabu, who since the creation of the Yunyoo Constituency in 2012 has been the MP on the ticket of the opposition NDC, lost to the NPP's Liwaal Oscar.

Hajia Lariba Abudu, who replaced Dr. Sagre Bambange during the NPP primaries, retained the seat for the party in Walewale.
