The Anticancer Chemicals in Soursop/ Graviola.

Feature Article The Anticancer Chemicals in Soursop Graviola.
SEP 26, 2020 LISTEN

We call it soursop; Scientists call it Annona Muricata. Others call it Graviola.

GRAVIOLA, ANNONA MURICATA (soursop, Brazilian pawpaw)

This tropical plant has edible fruit. The leaves and fruit pulp contain phytochemicals that help, the body to resist bacterial and protozoal infection, fight against cancer-cell developments, wound healing, inflammatory reactions, and lower blood pressures.

ANTICANCER PROPERTIES OF GRAVIOLA (2)
There are about 74 bioactive compounds in Graviola plants that have anti-cancer effects, from laboratory and animal studies.

Gaviola phytochemicals and Cytotoxicity
Gaviola extracts block ATP synthesis, and therefore energy production in cells.

Since cancer cells have high demand for energy than normal cells, , by blocking energy production in cancer cells, gaviola extracts have the potential in cancer treatment.

Purified extracts like Annocatacin (A/B) or Annocatalin have been shown to have cytotoxic effects, individually (or in combination with other AGEs) on the following:

Hepatic cancer cells
Breast cancer cells
Prostate cancer cells
Colorectal cancer cells
Renal cancer cell
Pancreatic cancer cells
Leukemia cells
Oral cancer cells.
AGEs and Apoptosis
What is Apoptosis?
Apoptosis is the ability of cells to self-destruct unneeded, damaged, and abnormal cells in the body. It is through apoptosis that many cancer cells are destroyed.

Faulty apoptotic systems lead to uncontrolled cell proliferation.

Cells are endowed with cellular enzymes known as Caspases. When these enzymes are activated, they eat away proteins in abnormal, and unneeded cells. By so doing, the caspases destroy those cells.

Fruit extracts from Graviola promote apoptosis (via activation of caspases) in

. Breast cancer cells.
. Colorectal cancer cells.
Gaviola plant extracts and and Modulation of cellular proliferation

In cancer, the normal cell cycle process is impaired, resulting in uncontrolled cell proliferation, growth, and tumor progression.

Grviola extracts have been shown to regulate the cell cycle machinery, leading to cell cycle arrest and inhibition of cell proliferation.

Graviola leaf extracts were reported to induce cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase in

Breast cancer cells
Colorectal cancer cells
Lung cancer cells,
Ethanol extracts of roots, fruits, or leaves inhibited proliferation via G0/G1 cell cycle arrest in leukemia HL-60 cancer cells

Graviola leaf extracts, contain chemicals that prevent cancer formation and progression in laboratory studies.

Among cancers affected by graviola leaf extracts are:

. Pancreatic cancers (tumor regression)
. Colon cancers (anti-proliferative, cytotoxicity, apoptotic)

. Lung cancers (cell cycle arrest)
. Breast cancers (antiproliferative, apoptotic)
Among cancers affected by Graviola fruit extracts:
. Prostate cancer (anti-proliferative)
. Breast (antiproliferative, apoptotic)
. Head and Neck cancers (antiproliferative, anti-tumorigenic)

Recommendation:
Graviola trees grow well in the tropics. Grow your own fruit trees in your backyards. Eat the fruit and use the leaves as herbs and tea, regularly.
