Ashanti Gold confirmed their status as the best Club in the local league in Ghana currently when they defeating Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa to win the 2006 MACUFE Cup in South Africa on Sunday.
The miners left it late with Evergreen Emmanuel Osei Kufuor getting the vital goal in the 89th minute of the highly action packed game to finish off the south African side who had looked the more dangerous side after clearly dominating possession.
The goal came via a sweet break from the middle of the pitch which led to a connection between Emmanuel Osei Kufuor and Alex Asamoah that tore the Sundowns defence into shreds.
Veteran Kufour finished off the move after Asamoah's shot came off the posts with Goalkeeper Bright Baloyi completely beaten.
In the lead up to the final Ashanti Gold defeated Blomfontein Celtic by a lone goal.
Earlier Accra Hearts of Oak were eliminated on penalty shootouts by Sundowns after they drew 2-2 in regulation time.
Eric Gawu rediscovered his scoring boots while Ishmael Addo got Hearts' second goal but that was not enough to get Kostadinov Dubrez's side into the final.
