My God! My God! Why Art Thou Far From Helping Me?

I. MY DEAR BROTHER, are you at the point where you need to cry: “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?” (Psalm 22:1 KJV).

This is not the prayer of a backslider. It is not the cry of an unbeliever. It is the cry of David, a man after God’s own heart—and later the cry of Jesus Christ Himself on the cross.

This passage reveals a profound truth:
It is possible to be deeply anointed and still feel deeply abandoned.

To be faithful and still feel forsaken.
If you have prayed without feeling heard, fasted only for problems to worsen, or served God yet faced pain—this word is for you. This cry is not a sign of failure. We must stop pretending in church as if all is well. It is not always well. Some ministers of the Gospel are struggling in their rooms yet show up in church as if everything is perfect.

Brother, cry out sincerely today. It is a stage of your faith.

II. MY BELOVED SISTER, David cried, “Why art thou so far from helping me?”

David did not question God’s existence; he questioned God’s nearness. He knew God could help, but it felt like God would not help.

God prefers honest pain over pretentious praise. Today, the church is full of pretentious praises and dances—not unto God, but to impress men. Stop the pretence and begin to pray honestly.

The Psalms teach us that lament is a legitimate language of worship. Be honest with God—He already knows. You cannot deceive the One who formed you in your mother’s womb and named you before you were born.

David cried, “My God,” not “O God.”

Covenant remains even when feelings fade.
If you are in that place today—feeling that God is far from helping you—cry out and ask, “Why art Thou far from helping me?”

God is not offended by your question. He is moved by it.

III. DAUGHTER OF ZION, Jesus Christ also cried Psalm 22:1 on the cross:

“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

His cry was answered in three days, as captured in Psalm 22:24 and fulfilled on Resurrection Sunday:

“For He hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted… when he cried unto Him, He heard.”

The forsaking was for a season—for our salvation. Within three days, God answered the Son’s sincere cry.

On Good Friday, the Son of God felt forsaken. But the answer came in the fulness of time on Resurrection Sunday.

Cry out faithfully, and your resurrection will also come.

Your current affliction is a tunnel, not a grave.

God never allows pain without purpose.
Sometimes God’s help is not pulling you out of the fire, but standing with you in the fire—like the fourth man with the Hebrew boys in Daniel 3.

IV. SON OF MAN, your situation may not have changed yet, but heaven has heard.

Hebrews 13:5 assures us: “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

Your feeling is real, but it is not the truth.

Truth is higher than feeling.
He is closer than your breath.
The distance is felt, not factual.

Your testimony is being formed in this trial.

God will use the same place where you cried, “Why have You forsaken me?” as the place where you will declare, “Look what the Lord has done!”

Child of God, your cry of “My God, why art Thou far?” is not the end of your story.

It was David’s cry before his throne.
It was Jesus’ cry before His resurrection.

It is now your cry before your breakthrough.

Remember: God did not answer Jesus by taking Him down from the cross—He was preparing to bring Him up from the grave.

Some deliverances come only through resurrection, not removal.

Today, turn your question into a declaration:

Where you said, “Why are You far?” say, “Yet You are Holy.”

Where you said, “You are not helping,” say, “You have heard my cry.”

Where you said, “I am forsaken,” say, “I am still His.”

Hold on.
The same God who seemed far on Friday is already preparing your Sunday.

PRAYER

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, for everyone under the sound of my voice who feels abandoned, lonely, and far from help—let them feel Your nearness right now. Turn their groaning into glory, their pressure into purpose, and their forsaking into favour.

You heard David.
You heard Jesus Christ.
Hear us now.
