Health & Fitness Combining Neem Extract and Activated Charcoal: A Natural Weapon Against Antimicrobial Resistance

Every time antibiotics fail to cure a common infection, the world moves one step closer to a future where simple illnesses could once again become life‑threatening.

This growing problem is known as antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a condition in which bacteria and other microorganisms change over time and become resistant to medicines that once killed them, making infections harder and more expensive to treat.

To help address this public health challenge, research supervised by Ms. Essandoh Priscilla at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) investigated whether combining neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf extract with activated charcoal from coconut shells could produce an affordable antimicrobial material.

The study found that formulations containing neem extract inhibited the growth of the bacteria tested, while activated charcoal alone showed no antibacterial activity.

Although the combination did not demonstrate a clear synergistic effect, the findings showed that neem retained its antimicrobial activity when incorporated into activated‑charcoal‑based formulations, making it a promising candidate for further development.

If successfully optimized, this locally sourced material could contribute to safer water, cleaner healthcare environments, and reduced bacterial contamination — while helping preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics by lowering the spread of harmful bacteria.

The study demonstrates that simple natural resources, supported by scientific research, can become valuable tools in protecting public health and combating the global threat of antimicrobial resistance.
