Media personality and legal practitioner Serwaa Amihere has encouraged women to explore thrift shopping at Accra's Kantamanto Market instead of purchasing counterfeit designer products in an attempt to appear wealthy.
Speaking at The Complete Ignite Woman session on October 25, 2026, she highlighted the availability of quality and distinctive clothing at affordable prices, urging women to make smart fashion choices that align with their budgets.
She advised women against spending money on fake luxury brands simply because they want to keep up with the fashion choices of others.
According to her, thrift shopping provides an opportunity to look stylish without the financial pressure associated with expensive designer labels.
Drawing from her personal experience, Serwaa Amihere disclosed that she and her sister used to visit Kantamanto Market as early as 4 a.m. to purchase clothes when traders were opening fresh bales.
“If you go to Kantamanto, you'll find very nice things early in the morning, 4 a.m. We've gone there before. My sister and I used to go there early, 4 a.m. That's when they are opening the bale fresh. You get nice and exclusive. Even when you wear it, nobody will know that this thing is thrift, but who cares? You're rocking it very nicely,” she said.
Her recommendation comes amid her broader message encouraging women to resist the pressure to acquire expensive fashion items before they can comfortably afford them.
She argued that women should focus on finding clothing that suits their budgets and personal styles rather than buying counterfeit versions of luxury products to impress others.
Serwaa Amihere also cautioned that fake designer accessories could affect people's perceptions of the individuals carrying them, especially in professional settings.
Using the Birkin bag as an example, she noted the significant difference between the price of an authentic luxury item and the amount some sellers charge for counterfeit versions.
“The bag that costs over $25,000. Some people are selling it for GH₵300,” she remarked.
She further encouraged women to exercise patience as they work towards their aspirations, noting that the ability to afford high-end designer brands could come with time and financial growth.
Her comments reinforce the value of affordable fashion alternatives, including second-hand clothing, as women seek to maintain their personal style without stretching their finances to impress others.
