Ghanaian actress Nadia Buari has spoken out against domestic violence and the abuse of children in the home, warning that children exposed to violence can suffer lasting emotional and psychological harm.
In a post on X, Buari said the home should be a place where children feel safe, protected and loved. However, she noted that for many children, home has instead become a source of fear.
She stressed that domestic violence involving children should not be dismissed as a private family dispute, describing it as a form of abuse that requires attention and intervention.
“When they are hit too, the harm is even deeper. They learn that home is not safe and that the people who should protect them can hurt them,” she said.
According to Buari, domestic violence can take different forms, including physical, emotional, verbal, sexual and financial abuse. She added that children who grow up in violent environments may experience fear, anxiety, guilt, anger, sleep difficulties, withdrawal and behavioural changes.
The actress urged victims of abuse not to remain in violent situations in the hope that their partners would change.
“Abuse rarely stops without help. Apologies and promises do not erase violence,” she cautioned.
Buari also warned against remaining in abusive relationships solely for the sake of children, arguing that such environments could teach children that violence is a normal part of relationships.
She emphasised that marriage, cultural expectations and fear of public opinion should never be reasons for anyone to tolerate abuse.
“Love is not fear,” she stated.
Buari encouraged victims and people who witness signs of domestic violence to seek help, report through appropriate channels and prioritise the safety and wellbeing of themselves and their children.
