Veteran Nigerian actor Pete Edochie has strongly condemned domestic violence, insisting that beating a wife is neither a sign of strength nor a demonstration of heroism.
Speaking about marriage and the values that have sustained his 57-year marriage, Edochie said disagreements between couples are inevitable but should never be resolved through physical violence.
“I have been married for 57 years, and nobody has ever come into my house to say, ‘Oh, Pete, please stop beating this woman,’” he said.
The veteran actor maintained that there is no justification for a man to physically assault his wife, stressing that conflicts should instead be addressed through communication, reflection and apology.
“If you beat your wife, you’re not a hero. There is no point striking a woman, for God’s sake. It doesn’t make you a hero. There is nothing respectful about it and that does not demonstrate strength in any way,” he said.
Edochie’s comments come amid renewed public conversations about domestic violence and the treatment of women in relationships.
