Ghanaian musician Keche Andrew has opened up about the challenges artistes from Takoradi and the Western Region face when trying to break into the mainstream music industry.
According to the musician, Takoradi is home to many talented musicians and creatives, but the city does not provide the same level of support and opportunities available in Accra.
Keche Andrew argued that artistes who want to reach the highest level of Ghana’s entertainment industry often have to relocate to Accra, where most major industry players, media platforms, record labels, event organisers and other key stakeholders are based.
He noted that, in his view, no major star has been able to achieve significant mainstream success while remaining permanently based in Takoradi.
“No big star has made it while staying in Takoradi,” Keche Andrew stated, emphasising the importance of moving to Accra to pursue bigger opportunities.
The musician’s comments highlight the long-standing disparity between Ghana’s regional creative hubs and Accra, which remains the country’s dominant centre for the entertainment business.
Although Takoradi has produced several notable musicians and continues to boast a vibrant creative community, Keche Andrew believes proximity to the capital can give emerging artistes greater access to the networks and platforms needed to advance their careers.
He explained that relocating to Accra does not necessarily mean an artiste lacks talent in Takoradi. Rather, the move can be a strategic decision to position oneself closer to the people and institutions capable of creating opportunities in the industry.
