No single artiste can take Ghanaian music global – Black Sherif

Musician Black Sherif has pushed back against the belief that a single Ghanaian artiste can take the country’s music to the global stage, insisting that international success must be driven by the collective strength of the industry.

The musician made the remarks while speaking on the Afternoon Show, where he reflected on the challenges facing Ghanaian music and the expectations placed on individual artistes.

Black Sherif said it is unrealistic to expect one musician to represent and promote the entire Ghanaian music industry internationally.

“It is not realistic for one person to carry the entire Ghanaian music to the global stage as people assume,” he stated.

He explained that although artistes have a role to play in expanding Ghanaian music internationally, their individual efforts have limitations.

“There’s only so much one person can do; we need people and collective motion in the industry,” he said.

The musician also questioned some of the comparisons made between Ghana’s music industry and music industries in other countries, suggesting that differences in how music is consumed and promoted should be taken into consideration.

Beyond the global music conversation, Black Sherif also spoke about his own artistic development, describing his latest musical direction as a reintroduction of himself.

He explained that the different phases of his musical journey, from his days in high school and his early work in 2019 to music created during the COVID-19 pandemic, have all contributed to the artiste he is today.

“The music I was making in 2019 and in high school, the music I was making during the pandemic, they sound like Sun Sherif. So this is a reintroduction of me and how many layers there are to me,” he said.

His comments point to both a broader vision for Ghanaian music and a personal evolution in his creative identity.
