“The fastest way to ruin a child’s life is to shield them from struggle” — Patience Ozokwor warns parents

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has sparked a conversation about parenting, wealth and independence with her candid advice to parents.

The actress shared her views during an interview on Babs TV on August 30, 2026, where she cautioned parents against raising their children in an environment where they are completely protected from life's challenges.

According to Ozokwor, parents who constantly try to ensure their children never experience the difficulties they went through while growing up could unintentionally prevent them from developing resilience and the ability to become self-reliant.

“The fastest way to ruin a child's life is to say you don't want them to suffer the way you did. I'm not saying allow them to suffer. What I'm saying is allow them to struggle. Go through the process,” she stated.

She explained that there is a difference between deliberately making children suffer and allowing them to experience manageable challenges that can teach them discipline, perseverance and appreciation.

Mama G also used wealthy families and inheritance as an example of how excessive pampering can affect children.

She imagined a situation where parents own several properties in different cities but their children have little understanding of the sacrifices that went into acquiring them.

“When they don't struggle, can you imagine you have, like, 20 houses? You have in Enugu, you have in Abuja, you have in Lagos. Your children will just be struggling, ‘Which one belongs to me?’ They don't know how you struggled to get those things,” she said.

The veteran actress believes parents should allow their children to understand that wealth does not automatically translate into entitlement.

She disclosed that she adopted the same philosophy in raising her own children, revealing the firm message she gave her son concerning her property.

“I told my son, ‘My house isn't yours, go and work for your own.’”

Ozokwor further argued that children should be allowed to experience “little pains” in life so they can appreciate their privileges and understand the effort required to achieve success.

She stressed, however, that her advice should not be interpreted as encouraging parents to deliberately expose their children to severe hardship.
