Ghana’s music industry has once again been left off the global stage, as no Ghanaian artiste earned a nomination for the 2026 BET Awards, announced on Tuesday, May 19.
The absence deepens concerns about Ghana’s declining visibility at one of the world’s most prestigious music award schemes, despite the international rise of several Ghanaian acts.
Ghana has enjoyed notable moments at the BET Awards in the past. Sarkodie made history in 2012 when he won the Best International Act: Africa award, becoming one of the first Ghanaian musicians to claim the honour. Stonebwoy followed in 2015 with the same award, reinforcing Ghana’s influence on the African music scene.
Over the years, artistes such as R2Bees, MzVee, Kojo Antwi, Fuse ODG, D-Black, Kwesi Arthur, Black Sherif and Camidoh have all secured nominations. Black Sherif also won Best International Flow at the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards, marking another milestone for Ghana.
However, Ghana’s representation has slowed significantly in recent years, even as the country continues to produce globally recognised talent.
Industry watchers say the trend raises questions about visibility, promotion, and the global positioning of Ghanaian music at a time when Afrobeats and African pop are dominating international charts.
