Ghanaian politician and musician Kwame Asare Obeng, widely known as A Plus, has made headlines after boldly comparing Ghana’s highlife legend Daddy Lumba to the late global pop icon Michael Jackson.
In an interview, the Gomoa Central MP passionately declared that Daddy Lumba’s legacy is as impactful as that of the late American superstar, asserting that the only real difference between them is the language they sang in.
“Daddy Lumba is a legend. The only difference between him and Michael Jackson is the language—Lumba sings in Twi and Michael in English,” A Plus stated.
According to him, Lumba's influence on Ghanaian music is second to none. He emphasized the musician's consistency and brilliance, particularly during the prime of his career.
“From when he started till around 1999, he released 26 albums. Each album had six hit songs. Everything after that was a bonus,” A Plus said, highlighting the remarkable impact Daddy Lumba had in shaping the Ghanaian music industry.
His comments have since sparked widespread debate on social media, with many fans praising his bold comparison, while others are weighing in on the global reach of Michael Jackson versus Daddy Lumba’s national and continental dominance.
Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, is celebrated for his smooth vocals, poetic lyrics, and timeless hits that have shaped the sound of highlife music for over three decades. He passed away recently, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire generations of Ghanaian artistes.
