Famous American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder has officially become a citizen of Ghana after receiving his Certificate of Citizenship.
On Monday, May 13, Kow Essuman, the Legal Counsel to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, announced via X that Wonder had taken the Oath of Allegiance at the presidential office known as Jubilee House in Accra, Ghana's capital city.
"Stevie Wonder is officially Ghanaian. He has just taken the Oath of Allegiance and received the Certificate of Citizenship by Registration at Jubilee House. Congratulations, Sir and welcome to Ghana," Essuman stated.
Wonder, whose real name is Stevland Hardaway Morris, has long expressed an affinity for Ghana and an identification with his African ancestry.
In the 1970s, he referred to himself as "the third from the sun" in several songs, reflecting a desire to connect more closely with his African roots.
The iconic American musician is best known for his soulful voice and pioneering use of synthesizers in historic songs like "Superstition," "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," and "I Just Called to Say I Love You."
