Award-winning Ghanaian rapper Medikal has urged the media to applaud the efforts artists in the rap genre have made towards Ghanaian music’s global recognition.
He pointed out the Ghanaian drill music, which many refer to locally as Asakaa that has gained a spot in the Grammy nominations.
In a tweet on Monday, November 13, the ‘Too Risky’ singer asserted that the rappers have created a chance for the current generation and future ones.
“The industry and the media should applaud rappers in the country for creating the Ghanaian drill spot in the Grammy category, that alone is a very big achievement for our music industry but it’s not talked about enough. We’ve created a chance for this generation and beyond,” wrote Medikal.
The conversation about Ghanaian artists not winning Grammys like the Nigerians do has been long-running.
Many music enthusiasts in the country anticipated a Ghanaian would be nominated following the creation of the African Music Performance category last year.
However, the category had four Nigerians, namely Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy and Davido and two South African singers, Musa Keys and Tyla.
