Ghanaian rapper Michael Owusu Addo known in showbiz as Sarkodie, has explained why he decided to be an independent artist.
At the start of his career, the rapper refused the offer by the Senegalese-American music giant Akon to get him signed to his Konvict label, a decision that left many of his fans disappointed.
In a new song titled "Fraud Nixxa (man) in Suit (FNIS)," the award-winning hip-hop act explained why he chose not to be signed to any record label, implying that most label managers are cheats.
According to the rapper, musicians on record labels are constantly dictated to and restricted from doing certain things that could advance their careers when it is not in the managers' best interests.
“There’s always going to be some fraud [man] in a suit, trying to give you some money to stay mute. Always been part of the game, this is not new.
“How many be real owners? Just a few,” he noted.
Passing a piece of advice to his fellow musicians, the reigning VGMAs artist of the decade said, “Don’t trust nobody, my [man], trust you. There’s nobody really in the game and that’s true.”
Despite being on his own, Sarkodie has defied all odds to become Africa's most decorated rapper, with international honours including BET, MVTV, and a slew of others, not to mention the numerous ones received in Ghana.
