The organizer of the Miss Rwanda beauty pageant has been arrested following allegations of sexual abuse by some contestants.
According to authorities, Dieudonne Ishimwe was picked up by the police a month before this year’s edition of the contest.
Meanwhile, the CEO of Rwanda Inspiration Back-Up is yet to respond to the arguments leveled against him.
According to an employee of the country’s biggest beauty pageant, four girls who contested last year and in this year’s edition had lodged complaints to security personnel for Ishimwe’s arrest.
“While the case was still under investigation, he was arrested on Monday,” the employee told BBC under anonymous conditions.
A state investigator was quoted by local media to have said that Mr. Ishimwe allegedly abused the contestants of the contest on different occasions.
According to the Rwandan law, sexual acts “by force, threats, trickery or by use of authority over that person” is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
Reports have it that spokesperson of Rwanda Inspiration Back-Up who was the winner of the 2019 edition resigned in the wake of the allegations.
