Listeners of Joy FM were Friday morning held spellbound on the station's flagship programme the Super morning Show.
It was unusual. Three hosts- Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, Evans Mensah and Bernard Saibu were all present to host the show.
The Friday edition was adopted by Evans Mensah but for weeks now nothing was heard of him. Bernard took over. He seamlessly hosted side-by-side with Kojo.
Speculations became rife. Kojo is on his way out! Where? Nobody knew.
For close to three hours and with an emotional opening by Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, listeners were prepared for the worst. Their fears were just about to be confirmed.
The encircling gloom that came with the opening; the repetitive play of Osibisa's “we are going” evoked painful memories of how the 'Boss player' Komla Dumor left for BBC; how Akwasi Sarpong ditched listeners for BBC; how Matilda Asante, Kofi Owusu, Papa Kow Acquaye all left.
Who was next? Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah or Evans Mensah.
It was certain though that Bernard was staying, perhaps, taking over the morning show after weeks of under-training.
Ato Kwamena 'panic' sorry Dadzie in his news paper review segment had promised to let the big secret out but surprisingly he kept his little 'diarrhoea mouth' shut, much to the chagrin of listeners.
Finally and painfully the hour came. I bet many listeners predicted it was Kojo but no it was Evans Mensah the 'master chef'.
He had taken over the Super Morning Show on days Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah was off and he did it so well.
He had his own style; his confidence outstanding. From a young reporter's position in 2004, Evans Mensah climbed the rungs of success in Joy FM as a Broadcast Journalist; hosted the major news bulletin, News Night, before taking up the adorable, yet challenging position as sit-in host of the morning show.
After six years of excellent service to Joy FM, he is taking a bow to pursue higher education at the London School of Economics.
It was not Kojo leaving but it was still sad for listeners and most of all for the production team of the Super Morning Show and the news team.
Evans was more than a colleague at work. He was a brother. He will be sorely missed at least for a year.
