Education What you need to know before writing WAEC Exams.
MAR 20, 2018 LISTEN

WAEC is an acronym for West African Examinations Council, a non-profit-making organization, established in 1952 with the purpose to conduct examinations in the public interest and to award certificates that is equivalent to other certificates of examining authorities in the United Kingdom.

Note that WAEC Exams is very important because it is the first external examination that determines your admission status. You must not fail waec because so many things will go wrong if you do. That’s why you should do everything within your ability to pass waec in one sitting.

For the past few years, more than 60% of students have failed this examination. But you see, it is not a rocket science or anything so difficult that you cannot pass, all you need is an adequate preparation with few tips to help you down the road.

Below, you will find the 8 things you need to know before taking waec examination. Study it well, take relevant notes and apply it as soon as possible and you can be sure to do well in your waec exams.

1. Have a strong desire to pass WAEC exams.
Do you have the strongest desire to pass waec examination? If yes how bad is it?

The truth is that most students fail waec exams because they never had a strong desire to pass it in the first place. They see the WAEC as a panel that’s already judged them before their first trial appearance.

And if they had an option, they’d not appear for the exam at all.

These students lose the battle in their mind even before it’s fought.

When you have a strong desire to succeed, your body would be programmed and you’ll be move to chase it, so lit your fire of desire today. Let it BURN.

2. Develop a study plan
Do you have a study plan? Don’t wait until it’s 3 weeks to the start of the exam before you start intense reading. Start preparing the moment you know you’d write the exam.

A study plan, in general, is an organized schedule that students create that outlines study times and learning goals. Just like with work or school schedules, students should develop a schedule where they can block off days and times in their calendar and only dedicate that to studying.

Creating a study plan will not only help you become more organized, but it also holds you accountable for your own learning outcomes. If you are a home student, a study plan is even more important to your success, since you need to have self-discipline and determination to complete your studies without the constant reminders of an instructor.

3. Know and understand your learning style.
How best do you study? Do you know that every individual learns in a slightly different way?

It’s important you know the most suitable way for you to study to get the maximum result.

Some people learn best by looking, others learn best by listening and few more by doing.

Figuring out your best style of learning will help you greatly in achieving your goal of passing WAEC exams. In most cases, it can even do away with labels, like "attention deficit disorder (ADD)" or "learning disabled (LD)."

4. Know that you come first
Knowing that you come first doesn’t mean you should be selfish or anti-social.

But you need to know that, after high school, you and your friends are most likely to go separate ways. But your WAEC results will go with you wherever you go.

So whatever you do should be in your best interest.

If you fail the WAEC examination at the expense of helping others, you’re to blame.

Note that, helping others is not bad, but when the help you give them becomes a liability, you need to cut it off. Remember, it’s your life.

5. Discover and build on your weaknesses
Your weaknesses are areas where you can’t make much impact. For example,

if you find it difficult to solve problems in differentiation, then calculus might be your weakness.

If people find it difficult to read your materials, then bad handwriting might be your weakness.

Your weaknesses prior to the exams could be anything from:

  • Topics you don’t find pleasant,
  • Your poor (ineligible) handwriting capacity,
  • Your poor drawing capacity,

There is nothing wrong in trying to build on your weakness. The only thing wrong is for you to neglect to work on it.

If you fail to work on your weaknesses, you stop to improve yourself and that can lead to your downfall.

For instance:
You may not become an expert in solving problems on differentiation all at once. Yet, the little you’ve struggled to learn could fetch you a few marks on the exams.

A few marks can make you move from a B to an A. Do not forget this.

One of the best ways to do this is to hire a private tutor to help you identify your areas of weakness and guide you to work on them. You can also take practice test centered on every topic for every subject you plan to write.

6. Be careful of handling easy topics
If you take any WAEC past questions, you’d surely see some that students would usually consider being “easy questions”.

Most of these “easy questions” are awarded high marks. But yet, students still fail to answer these correctly.

The problem was not that these students were not intelligent enough to get the questions right. Nope. But it was because they were too busy focusing on covering relatively harder topics at the expense of these “easy ones”.

To most students concentrating on topics treated in their final year is more important, and so they end up neglecting others because to them they were too easy to handle and did not need much attention.

But when this same question appears in the exams, they find it difficult to answer.

So don’t make that mistake, and don’t look down on any topic even if you think it’s very easy.

7. Watch your health
It’s a very bad thing to be inflicted by sickness before the exam.

So watch your health before the examination day.
If you’ve been bitten by lots of mosquitoes lately, take some malaria medicine a week before the exam.

Otherwise, imagine the damage you’d face if you were hit by malaria a day to the exam.

More so, try to eat well, because your brain won’t be able to function at its best if you’re not eating properly. Getting enough nutrients will allow your body and brain to function optimally while you study for the examination.

Make sure that you eat the right food at regular intervals.

Also, dehydration can cause fatigue, so drink plenty of water.

Finally, it is important for you to avoid stress, spend some time reading, but don’t overwork your brain. Some students spend the whole night reading, only to forget what they read the next morning due to stress.

8. Know that your teachers are important
Some WAEC exams, especially for those writing BECE/ WASSCE examinations, have their class work as a percentage score for each subject.

And I believe you already know who is responsible for submitting your class scores—your teachers.

What most teachers do is to give their entire students marks above average for different reasons.

However, if your teacher doesn’t like you, he/she could give you a mark that will guarantee you stand a hard chance of scoring an A on the examination.

So if you are the type that always creates problems for your teachers—repent.

Also, if you treat your teachers nicely, they’d be motivated to teach you to the best of their ability.

You may not like your teachers, but just act as if you do. You may even need this skill to excel in the real world.

9. Be active and study consistently
This is one of the hardest parts of your preparation to pass the WAEC examination.

It’s one thing to make a promise to read every day or to obey your timetable.

However, it’s another thing to keep to this promise.

Distraction, procrastination, and laziness shouldn’t be allowed to be. They are just ingredients that’ll guarantee you fail the WAEC examination.

Also, though it’s good to cover every topic in the WAEC syllabus. It’s also important you cover more than what is listed in your Syllabus because WAEC is known for bringing trial questions. These questions are usually from topics that are not on the WEAC syllabus.

Hence, reading wide can place you in a position to answer a trial question and get it right. This could save you the hustle of answering a relatively harder question on the exam.

10. Don’t plan to depend on anybody for your success.

If you plan to depend on someone on the examination day, you may end up disappointed, frustrated and dejected.

You see humans cannot be 100% trusted. Your best friend who even promised to help you on the exam day may disappoint you.

Your girlfriend or teachers may not be able to help you either.

So my advice to you is to :
Learn and prepare to stand on your own because you are your best savior.
