Back pain and back related problems are very common. It is one of the top 3 conditions in the world for which people visit doctors. The commonest cause of back pain is muscle sprain. Treatment can start right away at home. Ice packs help in the acute stage (usually within 24 to 48 hrs after the pain started ) Hot fomentation ( heat therapy) helps in chronic dull aches. Moist heat ( wrapping a warm wet towel over a hot water bag ) is better than dry heat. Along with this rest for short period of time (2-3 days ) is recommended. This offloads the spine and helps relieve the spasm.

Once the worse passes, steps should be taken to prevent repeated attacks. This involves evaluation and correct rehabilitation in form of supervised exercises ( Physiotherapy). Even after the back pain is treated completely daily exercise like walking, endurance exercises help rebuild and strengthen the weak muscles. Here are some useful tips which help to reduce back pain problem. Always keep your body active. Regular exercise, a small 30 minutes walk, riding a bicycle, swimming helps to keep the spine healthy and back strong. Maintain a healthy weight not just by exercising but also by eating right. Excess weight especially belly fat increases the load on the back causing back related problems.

Stay hydrated always. The more the body gets its hydration the more it becomes healthy and flexible. Reduce the stress on the neck and back area, by changing positions and doing small stretches of back and neck while working in an office environment.

One should pay attention to the warning signs or 'Red flags'. Constant or worsening back pain not responding to the above measures, any pain associated with fever, any associated leg pain/numbness /weakness is indicative of a more severe problem and should get diagnosed and treated by the spine specialist.
