THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL IN AN ORGANIZATION

Performance appraisal serves a good number of purposes in organizations. In the context of socialization, performance appraisal provides important feedback about how well the individual is getting along in the organization (Gibson, Ivancevich and Donnelly, 2008). In addition to this, employees' performance should be evaluated regularly for many reasons. One reason is that performance appraisal may be necessary for validating selection devices or assessing the impact of training programmes. A second reason is administrative; it aids in making decisions about pay increments, promotions, and training. Another reason is to provide feedback to employees to help them improve their performance and plan future careers (Griffin, 2006).
