A sensational first-half hat-trick from Ashanti Gold captain Shafiu Mumuni inspired the side to a 3-0 win over Akonangui FC on Saturday afternoon to ensure they secure qualification to the second round of this year’s CAF Confederations Cup.
Prior to the encounter, the Ghanaian club forced the Equatorial Guinea side to settle for a 1-1 draw when they visited them for the first leg of the tie a fortnight ago.
Needing at least a goalless draw to oust their opponent, the Elephants put up an impressive performance at home that saw them netting three times even before the 10th-minute mark of the first half.
Striker Shafiu Mumuni who missed the first half through injury returned to the starting lineup of Ashgold and converted a penalty kick just two minutes into the match to give his side the lead.
Four minutes later, the striker was at it again and capitalized on a defensive blunder to score his second goal of the afternoon.
He completed his hat-trick with a fine strike from close range after showing good positioning in the opponent’s 18-yard box.
Akonagui FC upped their game in the remaining minutes of the first half but failed to convert any of the half-chances that came their way, especially from set-pieces.
Despite a pulsating encounter in the second half, neither of the two clubs really threatened and were unsuccessful as far as goal-scoring is concerned.
Ashanti Gold has now progressed into the next round of the CAF Confederations Cup and will be looking forward to enjoying further success in the inter-club competition.
