GIS Student Wins 2017 Mentors Chess Academy Competition

Rohan Karmchandani from Ghana International School (GIS) emerged a winner in the U-18 category of the Mentors Chess Academy competition held at the GIS over the weekend.

This year's competition saw 40 players battling it out for the ultimate.

The event had young chess players from various international schools including the host school, Al- Rayan International School, Ridge Church School, DPS International and American International School.

The players battled it out for the utmost prize in the serenity of the playing hall accentuated by the soft music playing in the background.

Heads were firmly cupped in hands as eyes hovered intently across the board in search of the best move.

At the end of the competition, it was Karamchandani from the GIS who won the gold medal in the Under-18 category.

He finished first ahead of Shiv Brar from Al -Rayan International School, who came face to face with Sneh Van of the Roman Ridge School to clinch the silver medal.

In the Junior category, Sedzorme Roy of Emmanuel Presby School finished first and took home the gold medal and a cash prize whilst Saini Mantram from DPS international school took home the bronze medal, after a tie-break with a fellow schoolmate, Thakwani Jeet, who placed second.

Mary Lee of American International School won the best female chess player medal in the junior category whilst Alisha Punjabi, from Merton international school, also won the best female in the senior category.

The Director of the Mentors Chess Academy, David Acheampong said the event was a huge success and encouraged participants to continue practising not only to improve their game but also to derive the numerous benefits associated with playing chess.

Playing chess, he noted, helps children to concentrate and be critical thinkers as well as helping them to improve their math and overall academic performance.

Mr Acheampong called on corporate entities to come on board to support the sport. GNA
